• I have chosen, called, and redeemed you [election and redemption].

• So we belong to each other: you will be my people; I will be your God [covenant].

• Now, here is the way I want you to live [law].

• I give you this law to help you live in ways that will both please me and be best for you, and will also show my character to the nations.

• Follow my laws, for my sake, for your own sake, and for the world’s sake.

So, a major part of the purpose of the law in the Old Testament was to shape Israel for their participation in the mission of God. They were to be different from the nations in order to be a light to the nations.

Examples

Here are some texts that express this point. Again, I love preaching and teaching from them!

a) Genesis 18:18 – 21: Keeping the way of the LORD

This story comes from hundreds of years before the law was given, of course, but it shows clearly why the law was given later. You might find it helpful to read the whole of chapter 18, and just note where it is leading in chapter 19.

God has been enjoying a meal with Abraham and Sarah in the company of two angels. The three visitors are on their way down to Sodom and Gomorrah to bring judgment on them (which comes in ch. 19). But on their way they stop to renew God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah that they will have a son of their own — very soon. Then, as they leave, God has a little conversation with himself — about Abraham and his purpose for him.
